Adding Length to Jeans for Girls

September 8, 2014 By: katie.s.kelly@gmail.com

Fall is slowly creeping in here.  Not quite at the pace that I’d like it, but slowly.

My crazy daughter loves wearing skinny jeans.  Even in July, most of the time she requests a dress, or jeans.  She has shot up over the summer (her new height average is crushing my dreams of wearing the same size shoe), and outgrew most of her jeans.  Being the cheap frugal person that I am, I wasn’t quite ready to buy her all new jeans when she hasn’t worn holes in the ones she has, and it’s not that cold yet.  It’s so strange being at the end of the season with pants that don’t have holes in them…still adjusting to having a girl!

I figured I would add something to the bottom to lengthen them.  There are some really cute fabric tutorials on Pinterest, but I wanted something cheap and quick.  The name of my crafting game.  So while I was in the trim section at Hobby Lobby I checked out their lace.  It was a little too frilly for me, plus I knew it wouldn’t hold up well to being put through the washer.  Then the eyelet caught my eye.  It’s pretty versatile, which I was looking for, and the cotton would hold up well.  I grabbed a half a yard.

When we got home, I had planned to sew the eyelet onto the jeans but as I looked at it, I didn’t have the right thread color.  Plus as I was thinking about it, I wanted the ability to consign my daughters Gap skinnies after we were done with them, and felt the eyelet may make that difficult.  So out came the hot glue gun.

I started with more length that I thought I would need for each leg…plenty to overlap.  Once my glue gun was hot, I just put a small dash at a time on the eyelet edge and placed it along the inside hem of the jean leg.  I kept this up going slowly.  Once I got all the way around, I left a little overlap and glued that under my starting point.  Then I repeated on the next leg.  Doing both legs only took me about 5 minutes.

Both of us were happy with the results.  They have already been worn and washed twice and everything is still holding great!  You could do the same thing to leggings, which I see happening in my future!
